Amongst Cacti - Monday, July 18
My recent travels south have taken me through many desert cities here in socal, but I've finally landed in Desert Hot Springs. Just north of Palm Springs and a few clicks south of Joshua Tree. Yesterday I had a chance to hike in the Santa Rosa Mountains where water is sparse and the desert life seems to thrive on temps well above 100. Although I didn't see any, Big Horn sheep are scattered throughout this area and have been making a comeback since people first moved in and saw the sheep as insignificant at the time. Tomorrow I'm going into J-Tree just before dawn for a long hike through the fields of cacti and possibly some light rock climbing. By 11am the rocks are on fire and even climbing in the shade makes for some sweaty times. More soon from the land of Joshua Trees.
